&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Con piacere ascoltammo dal R&lt;em&gt;everen&lt;/em&gt;do nostro Padre Provinciale quelle parole di Vostra Paternità aggiunte ad una lettera non molto fa inviatagli, per le quali ci fa intendere avere il S&lt;em&gt;anto&lt;/em&gt; Padre affidato alla Compagnia la coltura del Giappone, e che Vostra Paternità sperava, alcuni di questa Provincia, che chiesti aveano di andare alla Cina, volessero commutarla col Giappone. Parmi in questo fatto essere a noi intervenuto non altrimenti da quello, che avvenne a’ figli d’Isai, allorchè presentatosi da parte di Dio il profeta Samuele, fece loro intendere, che uno dovea ungerne a Re d’Israello. Ciascuno facilmente dicea fra se: Oh foss’io l’eletto a tanta ventura! Così al sentir noi, che di questa provincia alcuni erano ricerchi pel Giappone, ognun’di coloro, che desiderio nutriva delle missioni Cinesi, avrà seco medesimo senza fallo detto: Oh foss’io il ben’avventurato! Ed io in verità il dissi, o Padre mio; anzi pensai che di me ricordatasi fosse la Paternità vostra, come quegli, che non ha guari ne l’avea caldamente pregato, ed esposto i suoi desideri con una lettera de’ 14. del passato Luglio. Io ben so, che l’ultimo de’ figli d’Isai, e ‘l men curato degli altri fu l’eletto da Dio; ma chi di me più povero ed abbietto? Laonde per questa parte ho che sperare. Piaccia a Dio mettere gli occhi in questo vile ed inutil servo. Vostra Paternità però desidera un successore del P&lt;em&gt;adre&lt;/em&gt; Mastrilli; gran sorte certamente per chi ne sarà fatto degno: ma se, senza far altro, converrà a prima giunta spargere fortunatamente il sangue in testimonio della Fede, che sarà delle anime da salvare, della gloria di Dio da dilatare? Del resto faccia il Signore quello, che più gli è a grado. Veggo questa Missione essere molto conforme a’ desideri, che mi dà Iddio; perciocchè bisogna portarsi in capo al Mondo, e incominciare &lt;em&gt;a Solis ortu&lt;/em&gt;. E se fosse in piacer di Dio, che calando [giù] per quelle regioni giugner si potesse &lt;em&gt;usque ad occasum&lt;/em&gt;, salvando anime, e dilatando la gloria del Divino nome! Ecce &lt;em&gt;in manibus tuis&lt;/em&gt; (come in quelle di Dio) &lt;em&gt;sortes meae&lt;/em&gt;. Disponga di me vostra Paternità, come stima &lt;em&gt;in Domino&lt;/em&gt;.
