È da molto tempo ch’io mi sento spinto d’esporre a Vostra Paternità Molto Reverenda un desiderio, che provai fin da giovanetto, che mi crebbe nella Compagnia, e più che mai mi si rafforzò dopo i Santi Esercizi ultimamente fatti; e tanto, che supera qualunque impressione lungo meditar d’intelletto avesse potuto produrre nella volontà. Fino ad ora non l’esposi, e perchè mi parea temerità, e perchè un pensier mi diceva di lasciar fare a Dio; ma ora mi fo coraggio a farlo, solamente per soddisfare al dovere di far sapere à Superiori tutto quello che passa nell’anima. Questo desiderio è delle Missioni estere. Esse furono sempre l’oggetto de’ miei sospiri; ma quando era nel secolo dovea soffocarli non ci vedendo retta la via: ora che mi par di vederci qualche probabilità, così mi sento dilatare il cuore, ch’abbraccierei, se potessi, tutto, e il solo pensiero mi da grande consolazione, e nuova vita. Se a Vostra Paternità Molto Reverenda facesse difficoltà la mia salute, sappia che grandi malattie non ne ho mai fatte, che nella Compagnia non fui a letto nemmeno una mezza giornata, e che il male nervale che mi molesta, non mi toglie di resistere alla fatica, e alle intemperie delle stagioni.
