&lt;p&gt;Crederei di essere colpevole innanzi a Dio, se io passassi sotto un ingrato silenzio o desiderj, che per sua infinita bontà egli si degna comunicarmi; imperciocche sin d'allorquando ebbi la sorte di leggere la vita di S&lt;em&gt;an&lt;/em&gt; F&lt;em&gt;rancesco&lt;/em&gt; Saverio, che fù l'anno mille ottocento tredici, mi sentii chiamato ad entrare nella Compagnia di Gesù, non ad altro fine, se non per seguire un Istituto, che oltre la propria ha per fine ancora l'altrui santificazione. Quindi fù, che animato da questo vivo desiderio, superai facilmente molti ostacoli, che mi si opponevano, domandai più volte di essere ammesso nella Compagnia, e quantunque mi fosse forza il sospirare l'accettazione per un anno intero, pure finalmente l'ottenni. Da Bergamo venni a Roma, entrai nel Noviziato di S&lt;em&gt;ant'&lt;/em&gt;Andrea nel mese di Novembre del mille ottocento quindici, e quivi per otto mesi continui soffrii i più fieri contrasti di spirito, de' quali io certamente ne sarei stato la vittima, od almeno avrei abbandonata la Compagnia, se meno pietosa era verso di me la Madre S&lt;em&gt;antissima&lt;/em&gt;, e se men fervido era il desiderio, che avea di giovare a' miei prossimi. Ma Dio certamente per punire la mia tiepideza, ed il poco profitto, che aveva fatto nel tempo del mio Noviziato mi mandò una malattia assai grave, quale fù quella di mandar sangue dalla bocca. Questo colpo in vero mi fù molto sensibile, e già credeva soccombere; pur nondimeno col permesso del mio Superiore feci un voto a S&lt;em&gt;an&lt;/em&gt; F&lt;em&gt;rancesco&lt;/em&gt; Saverio, che se egli mi guariva perfettamente io avrei domandato istantemente a' Superiori maggiori di andare in America, per ivi a suo tempo poter fare le missioni a quelle povere genti. Parve sul principio, che il Santo non mi volesse esaudire, ma pur finalmente non curando i miei demeriti, ha voluto concedermi una perfetta sanità, quale appunto godo al presente.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Ora però mi resta a far altro, se non che pregare la R&lt;em&gt;everenza&lt;/em&gt; V&lt;em&gt;ostra&lt;/em&gt; per il Sangue di Gesù Cristo, e per amore di Maria S&lt;em&gt;antissima&lt;/em&gt;, si degni concedermi la grazia di poter mantenere questo voto fatto al Santo, e di potere ancora così appagare questo mio desiderio mettendomi nel felice numero di coloro, che la prossima primavera partiranno col R&lt;em&gt;everendo&lt;/em&gt; P&lt;em&gt;adre&lt;/em&gt; Grassi alla volta dell'America. Avverta però, che se la R&lt;em&gt;everenza&lt;/em&gt; V&lt;em&gt;ostra&lt;/em&gt; giudicasse altrimenti, io intieramente mi rimetto in sua mano sicuro che quanto ella sarà per disporre di me, non sarà null'altro, se non che quella che vuole Iddio essendo ella mio superiore, e mi protesto, se così ordinasse, essere pronto del pari a partire quest'oggi per l'America, quanto ad andare in cucina per servire al cuoco.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
