Ora più maturamente considerato tale ministero nei mesi d’acchè sono entrato in Religione, stato da me anche per tale oggetto volentieri abbracciato, per potere cioè con miglior agio considerare detta cosa, e mettermi sulla via di mandarla ad effetto, qualora la perseveranza di tale sentimento accennasse di venire più alto che da umano pensiero che presto svanisce; trovai di non potere distornar la mia mente da tale disegno, senza far onta all’infinita Bontà che me ne dà un vivo continuato desiderio, anzi eccitamento a parteciparlo alla PaternitàVostra in un con la più viva istanza onde mi sia concesso consecrare i miei giorni e così tante fatiche. Per verità veggo io stesso non essere questa domanda da farsi da un novizio di pochi mesi, mentre in questa benedetta Compagnia tanti aspettano una tal grazia, già vecchi di religione, provati di virtù, forniti di ogni capacità; puro considerando il desiderio che ogni dì si accresce, la mia età già inoltrata, la salute che tuttavia mi accompagna, le personali qualità che mi danno maggior attitudine a fatiche di corpo, che a lunghe occupazioni mentali, e la felice necessità //  in che sarei d’offerire ogni giorno al Signore qualche travaglio in isconto de’ miei peccati; non ho saputo contenermi dell’indirizzare la presente a Vostra Paternità lusingandomi, che i miei voti, le mie circostanze, specialmente quella dell’età più che matura, potrebbero ottenermi ciò che pur non mi potrebbe altrimenti toccare, se non dopo lungo tempo. Quanto mi chiamarei avventurato, se potessi in un coi vantaggi dell’obbedienza trovati entrando in Religione, chiamare sopra di me quelle benedizioni promesse a chi evangelizza la pace. La lettera dal Padre Mengarini che si lesse in Refettorio mi destò nuovi e più vivi sentimenti di compassione, sopra quelle infelici tribù cui tuttavia non è arrivata la luce del Vangelo, ne io penso che lo scopo di tale lezione sia stato quello di svegliare inutili desiderj; ma bensì di preparare degli animi per tali fatiche. Eccomi adunque ai piedi di Vostra Paternità domandando di poter soccorrere a que’ barbari per la converzione de’ quali sembra non altro desiderarsi che coppia di operai. Quantunque però mi senta molto inclinato a poter giovare a queste povere tribù, ciò non pertanto mi offro volentieri, a quella qualunque siasi delle missioni, cui l’obbedienza fosse per destinarmi, sieno Piedi Neri, sieno altri, giacchè sarò estremamente consolato, qualora mi venga concesso di potere in qualunque siasi parte consummare questo rimasuglio di vita a vantaggio di quegli infelici, che pur sono compresi nel prezzo del sangue prezioso versato da Gesù Cristo.
