<p><span>Ed è per ciò che in questa bella favorevole circostanza vengo a scoprire alla Paternità Vostra un desiderio del mio Cuore il quale si è alle Sante Missioni. Deve sapere Vostra Paternità che anni adietro dimorando io, nel Collegio Romano, venne fatta a noi tutti Fratelli la spiegazione della famosa lettera scritta, dalla Paternità, Vostra Reverendissima, sopra ad infervorare alle Sante Missioni.</span></p>

Ho compito il corso degli studi, la sanità mi ha sempre assistito, la vita frugale e laboriosa da missionario conferisce non poco ad accrescerla: la forza dello spirito dopo tanti anni di vita religiosa potrebbero esser maggiori, ma confido nel Signor che m’invita per l’unico motivo di conformarmi sempre più a lui crocifisso, che queste mediante la sua divina grazia cresceranno ogni giorno sino ad emulare in qualche modo le robuste di quei nostri che segnaronci la via con tanti illustri esempi. Non mi faccio ad esporre ragioni e motivi affin di essere prescelto a così gran ministero, perché abbastanza, come credo, ne addussi nell’altra volta, e perché la d<em>ivina</em> Bontà come a me diede il vivamente desiderarle, così a V<em>ostra</em> P<em>aternità</em> suggerirà il designarmici, qualora in tutto sua sia la vocazione. In tal caso V<em>ostra</em> P<em>aternità</em> mi ha pronto ad incominciar tosto al mese degli esercizi la terza probazione per trovarmi all’ordine nella prossima partenza dei missionari, che intendo dover accadere sul finire dell’ottobre. <p><span>Dopo la S<em>anta</em> Comunione, e dopo aver raccomandato molto l’affare al N<em>ostro</em> S<em>anto</em> P<em>adre</em> Ignazio vengo ad esporle per iscritto un pensiero, che da qualche tempo vo nutrendo; V<em>ostra</em> P<em>aternità</em>, alla cui volontà, nella quale riconosco quella di Dio, in tutto mi sottometto, giudicherà se questo pensiero sia da Dio, o sia effetto della mia impazienza indiscrezione, e della vana mia presunzione.</span></p>
<p><span>Avendo inteso che V<em>ostra</em> P<em>aternità</em> abbia determinato di fare nel prossimo Ottobre una spedizione di alquanti Nostri per la Cina, il mio desiderio per questa Missione, che ogni giorno più cresce, mi ha fatto concepire qualche speranza che non potessi io altresì essere uno di quei fortunatissimi a ciò trascelti, ed è perciò che genuflesso a’ piedi di V<em>ostra</em> P<em>aternità</em> di questa grazia caldissimamente la prego. È vero che agli altri miei demeriti si aggiunge l’aver io ora solamente terminato il secondo anno di Teologia, ed il non essere per anco Sacerdote; ma e non potrei in quel anno o due, nei quali a tutti i Missionar</span>î <span>è forza rimanere inoperosi nella Cina: onde imparare i costumi, e la difficilissima lingua del paese attendere tutto insieme allo studio della lingua, ed a compiere il mio corso di Teologia, e così trovarmi dopo qualche anno al tempo stesso fornito dell’una, e dell’altra per impiegarmi nel profitto delle anime alla maggior gloria di Dio? e non potrei far ciò comodamente impiegandomi ad aiutare in qualche cosa gli alunni del piccolo Seminario fondato da Monsignor Besi? Io per me lo crederei non difficile; ma quanto è facile che io m'inganni, e che il mio desiderio ed amor proprio mi seduca; ed è perciò che io in tutto mi rimetto a V<em>ostra</em> P<em>aternità</em>. Ed in quanto agli altri innumerevoli miei demeriti? Ah! mio M<em>olto</em> R<em>everendo</em> P<em>adre</em> se questo desiderio viene da Dio, se il N<em>ostro</em> S<em>anto</em> P<em>adre</em>, cui ho raccomandato l’affare, mosso a compassione di me mi ottenga dal Signore questa grazia, saprà ben egli ottenermi altresì tanto di forze da potere, mediante la mia cooperazione, col divino aiuto non esser degenere suo figliuolo.</span></p>

<p><span>Un ben giusto riguardo di non esserle molesto col moltiplicar lettere mi trattenne di ringraziarla più presto, come doveva, della bella notizia comunicatami per mezzo del mio P<em>adre</em> Rettore di esser io nel novero dei candidati alle Missioni estere. Ora riflettendo che dal mio silenzio si potrebbe argomentare in me raffreddamento nei desiderj esternatile nell’altra mia dei 16. Marzo trascorso; perciò credo bene di offerirmi di bel nuovo alle disposizioni della P<em>aternità</em> V<em>ostra</em>; anzi di pregarla con tutto l’affetto mi voglia dare questa consolazione di mettermi nel numero degli eletti alle Missioni medesime. Sembrami che grazia né consolazione maggiore di questa io non posso attendere in questa vita, fuori che quella di chiudere i miei giorni in seno alla Comp<em>agni</em>a di Gesù.
